Bengaluru to Wayanad2 nights, by cab

Wayanad sits just across the Kerala border in the same forest belt as Bandipur and Nagarhole, and the drive is the most constrained on this list. The direct route through Bandipur closes overnight, which shapes the whole trip: you either leave Bengaluru early enough to clear it in daylight, or you take the longer road round.

Plan a Wayanad trip

Outstation trips run as a personal cab — the vehicle and driver are yours for the trip. Shared departures apply to airport and one-day getaway routes, not multi-day journeys.

Before you go

The Wayanad route has 2 requirements that will actually stop your trip if missed, and a few smaller ones. These change from time to time — confirm before you travel.

Bandipur night traffic ban — plan the whole trip around it

The 25 km forest stretch of NH-766 through Bandipur Tiger Reserve is closed to cars from 9 PM to 6 AM, every day. It is the direct route from Bengaluru, so a late departure means either an unplanned overnight stop or a long detour.

The night alternative is a real detour

The usual workaround is the Hunsur–Gonikoppal–Kutta–Mananthavady road, roughly 30 km longer and slower. It is a legitimate route, not a shortcut, and adds meaningfully to an already long drive.

Interstate permit into Kerala

A commercial vehicle crossing from Karnataka into Kerala needs the relevant interstate permit and entry tax. On a QuicReach trip this sits with the operator rather than with you.

Chembra Peak entry is limited

The trek is controlled by the forest department with capped daily numbers, fixed timings, and closures in heavy rain or high fire risk. Confirm before building a day around it.

Verified August 2026. Passes, caps and closures are revised from time to time — check the official source before travelling, and your QuicReach driver will confirm current conditions on the route.

A workable 2 nights plan

Day 1

  • Leave Bengaluru by 6 AM to clear Bandipur comfortably in daylight
  • Mysuru for breakfast
  • Cross into Kerala via Bandipur–Mananthavady or Gundlupet–Sultan Bathery
  • Check in by mid-afternoon; Pookode Lake in the evening

Day 2

  • Chembra Peak trek at first light if permits allow
  • Edakkal Caves late morning
  • Soochipara Falls in the afternoon

Day 3

  • Banasura Sagar Dam in the morning
  • Start back by early afternoon — the forest stretch must be cleared before 9 PM
  • Bengaluru by late evening

Places worth the drive

Edakkal Caves

Neolithic petroglyphs reached by a steep climb of about a kilometre. Go early; the ascent is unpleasant in the afternoon heat.

Chembra Peak

The heart-shaped lake trek. Entry is controlled by the forest department, with limited daily numbers and weather closures.

Banasura Sagar Dam

India's largest earth dam, with island views and boating in season.

Soochipara (Sentinel Rock) Falls

A three-tiered fall with a walk down through forest, strongest just after the monsoon.

Pookode Lake

A small freshwater lake ringed by forest, easy and family-friendly.

Thirunelli Temple and Tholpetty

In the far north of the district, paired with a wildlife morning at Tholpetty if you have the time.

Bengaluru to Wayanad: common questions

What time should I leave Bangalore for Wayanad?

By 6 AM if you are taking the direct route through Bandipur. The forest stretch of NH-766 closes to cars at 9 PM, and the drive is 6 to 7 hours — so a mid-afternoon departure risks arriving at a closed road. Leaving early also gets the ghat sections done in daylight.

Is the Bangalore to Wayanad road closed at night?

The Bandipur section is. Cars cannot use that stretch of NH-766 between 9 PM and 6 AM on any day of the year, a restriction in place for over a decade to reduce wildlife deaths. The practical alternative is the Hunsur–Gonikoppal–Kutta–Mananthavady road, about 30 km longer.

How many days do you need for Wayanad?

Two nights is the working minimum given the drive, and it covers Edakkal, one waterfall and one lake or dam comfortably. Chembra Peak needs an early morning of its own, so if that is the priority, plan three nights.

Is Wayanad safe to visit during the monsoon?

The district sees heavy rain and has experienced landslides in recent years, and forest treks including Chembra are closed at short notice in bad weather. October to May is the more reliable window; if you travel in the monsoon, keep the itinerary flexible and the driving in daylight.
