Bengaluru to Hampi — 2 nights, by cab
Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara empire spread across a boulder landscape that looks nothing like anywhere else in South India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is genuinely enormous, and the single biggest planning mistake is treating it as a day trip — you need two full days and an early start on both, because there is no shade and the afternoons are brutal.
Outstation trips run as a personal cab — the vehicle and driver are yours for the trip. Shared departures apply to airport and one-day getaway routes, not multi-day journeys.
Before you go
The Hampi route has 2 requirements that will actually stop your trip if missed, and a few smaller ones. These change from time to time — confirm before you travel.
One ASI combined ticket covers the main sites
A single Archaeological Survey of India ticket — ₹40 for Indian nationals, higher for foreign visitors — covers Vittala, the Lotus Mahal, the Elephant Stables and the Royal Enclosure. It is valid for the day of purchase, so plan those four for the same day rather than spreading them out.
Coracles stop running in high water
River crossings by coracle to Anegundi are suspended when the Tungabhadra is high, broadly June to September. In those months plan on the road bridge instead, which is a longer loop.
Heat is the real constraint
From March to May daytime temperatures make midday sightseeing genuinely unsafe among the boulders, where there is no shade. November to February is the sensible window; outside it, restrict yourself to early morning and late afternoon.
It is a protected heritage site
Climbing on monuments, drones without permission, and removing anything from the site are all prohibited. Hampi is actively monitored and the rules are enforced.
No interstate permit
Hampi is in Karnataka, so there is no border tax or interstate permit on this route.
Verified August 2026. Passes, caps and closures are revised from time to time — check the official source before travelling, and your QuicReach driver will confirm current conditions on the route.

- Start back by midday
- Bengaluru by evening
Places worth the drive
Vittala Temple and the stone chariot
The signature monument, with the musical pillars and the chariot that appears on the ₹50 note. Open 8:30 AM to 6 PM; an electric shuttle runs from the parking area.
Virupaksha Temple
The one still in active worship, at the heart of Hampi Bazaar. Working temple rules apply — footwear off, dress modestly.
Royal Enclosure and Lotus Mahal
The administrative heart of the empire, with the stepped tank and the Elephant Stables alongside.
Matanga Hill
The sunrise viewpoint over the ruins. A steep climb in the dark, and the best half hour of the trip.
Hemakuta Hill temples
A cluster of small pre-Vijayanagara shrines right above the bazaar — the easiest sunset spot.
Anegundi, across the river
Older than Hampi itself and far quieter. Reached by coracle or the road bridge, depending on season.
Bengaluru to Hampi: common questions
How many days do you need in Hampi?
Two nights, giving you two early mornings and two late afternoons. The site is spread over a large area with no shade, so the middle of the day is largely unusable for most of the year — a single day means seeing a fraction of it badly.
Do I need separate tickets for each monument in Hampi?
No. One ASI combined ticket covers Vittala, the Lotus Mahal, the Elephant Stables and the Royal Enclosure — ₹40 for Indian nationals. It is valid only on the day you buy it, so visit those four on the same day. Virupaksha Temple charges its own small entry separately.
How far is Hampi from Bangalore by road?
About 340 km and 6 to 7 hours by car, usually via Chitradurga. The road is good for most of the way, and an early start gets you there in time for sunset from Hemakuta Hill on the first evening.
When should I not go to Hampi?
March to May, when the heat among the boulders is severe and there is no shade anywhere on the site. June to September brings rain and suspends the coracle crossings. November to February is comfortable and the reason most people go then.
