Bengaluru to Kodaikanal — 3 nights, by cab
Kodaikanal is the quieter of Tamil Nadu's two big hill stations and the further of the two from Bengaluru — a long enough drive that two nights does not really work. Like Ooty, it now sits behind an e-pass system, and the two are administered separately, so a trip covering both needs two applications.
Outstation trips run as a personal cab — the vehicle and driver are yours for the trip. Shared departures apply to airport and one-day getaway routes, not multi-day journeys.
Before you go
The Kodaikanal route has 3 requirements that will actually stop your trip if missed, and a few smaller ones. These change from time to time — confirm before you travel.
Kodaikanal e-pass — mandatory, and separate from Ooty's
Vehicles without a local Tamil Nadu hill-district registration need an e-pass to enter Kodaikanal, applied for free at epass.tnega.org. It is now a year-round requirement rather than a seasonal one. Ooty and Kodaikanal are administered separately — if you are visiting both, you need two applications on the same portal.
Verification at the Silver Falls checkpost
The QR code is scanned on the approach road at Silver Falls. Have it accessible offline — mobile signal on the ghat road is unreliable.
This is a 3-night trip
At 8 to 9 hours each way, two nights leaves a single usable day. Three nights is the realistic minimum from Bengaluru.
Interstate permit into Tamil Nadu
A commercial vehicle crossing from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu needs the relevant interstate permit and border tax, handled by the operator.
The ghat road rewards daylight
The final climb is a long series of hairpins that is regularly in cloud. Plan to be on it in daylight in both directions.
Verified August 2026. Passes, caps and closures are revised from time to time — check the official source before travelling, and your QuicReach driver will confirm current conditions on the route.

Places worth the drive
Kodai Lake
The star-shaped lake at the centre of town, ringed by a cycling and walking path. Pleasant early, crowded by mid-morning.
Coaker's Walk
A cliff-edge promenade with valley views on a clear day and nothing at all in cloud. Short, and best at sunrise.
Pillar Rocks
Three granite pillars nearly 400 ft high, with a garden at the viewpoint. Frequently fogged in — go early.
Bryant Park
The botanical garden beside the lake, at its best during the May flower show.
Dolphin's Nose and Guna Cave
A walk out to a flat rock ledge over the valley, about 8 km from town.
Silver Cascade and Bear Shola Falls
Roadside falls, strongest just after the monsoon and thin before it.
Bengaluru to Kodaikanal: common questions
Do I need an e-pass for Kodaikanal?
Yes. Vehicles without a local hill-district registration need an e-pass to enter Kodaikanal, free from epass.tnega.org, and it now applies year-round rather than only in season. The QR code is checked at the Silver Falls checkpost. Note that Ooty and Kodaikanal are separate administrative areas — a trip covering both needs two separate e-passes.
How far is Kodaikanal from Bangalore?
About 460 km and 8 to 9 hours by car, typically via Salem and Dindigul before the ghat climb. It is one of the longer drives on this list, which is why it works as a three-night trip rather than a weekend.
Ooty or Kodaikanal — which is better from Bangalore?
Ooty is closer at roughly 270 km against 460, better connected, and busier. Kodaikanal is quieter, greener and feels less commercial, but the drive is a full day each way. For a two-night trip Ooty is the practical answer; for three or more nights and a preference for quiet, Kodaikanal is the better one.
What is the best time to visit Kodaikanal?
September to May. The post-monsoon months are clear and green, and April to June is peak season with the flower show. Viewpoints like Pillar Rocks and Coaker's Walk are frequently inside cloud regardless of season, so plan them for early morning.
