Bengaluru to Gokarna — 3 nights, by cab
Gokarna is a temple town with a string of beaches south of it, and the two halves sit oddly together — pilgrims at Mahabaleshwar temple in the morning, beach shacks a headland away. The drive from Bengaluru is long, so it works as a three-night trip; the beaches are connected by a cliff path rather than a road, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your knees.
Outstation trips run as a personal cab — the vehicle and driver are yours for the trip. Shared departures apply to airport and one-day getaway routes, not multi-day journeys.
Before you go
The Gokarna route has 2 requirements that will actually stop your trip if missed, and a few smaller ones. These change from time to time — confirm before you travel.
The beaches are linked by a cliff path, not a road
Half Moon and Paradise cannot be reached by car. The walk between beaches is 3 to 4 hours end to end over rocky headland with no shade, no drinking water and poor signal. Boats run between beaches in fair weather and are the sensible alternative.
Monsoon closes the sea and the boats
From June to September the sea here is rough, boat services stop, swimming is unsafe and the cliff path is slippery. Gokarna is effectively a different destination in those months.
Mahabaleshwar Temple has entry rules
It is an active temple with a dress code, restrictions on where non-Hindu visitors may go, and no photography inside. Worth knowing before arriving in beachwear from Kudle.
Long drive, plan for 3 nights
At roughly 480 km and 8 to 9 hours each way, a two-night trip is two driving days and one beach day. Three nights is the minimum that makes the distance worthwhile.
No interstate permit
Gokarna is in Karnataka, so there is no border tax or interstate permit — unusual for a trip this far from Bengaluru.
Verified August 2026. Passes, caps and closures are revised from time to time — check the official source before travelling, and your QuicReach driver will confirm current conditions on the route.

Places worth the drive
Mahabaleshwar Temple
The reason the town exists, with the Atmalinga at its centre. Actively worshipped, with dress rules and restrictions on non-Hindu entry to parts of it.
Kudle Beach
The first of the southern beaches and the easiest to reach on foot, with the most places to eat.
Om Beach
The one shaped like the symbol, reachable by road as well as the cliff path. Busiest of the group.
Half Moon and Paradise beaches
Further along the cliff path and progressively quieter. Paradise is the furthest and the least developed — access is on foot or by boat.
The beach trek
The cliff path linking Kudle through to Paradise, roughly 3 to 4 hours end to end with no shade and no water on the way.
Mirjan Fort
A laterite fort about 20 km inland, overgrown and almost empty. Worth the detour on the way in or out.
Bengaluru to Gokarna: common questions
How far is Gokarna from Bangalore?
About 480 km and 8 to 9 hours by car, usually via Hubballi. It is one of the two longest drives on this list, which is why it works as a three-night trip rather than a weekend — two nights would be two full days in the car for one on the beach.
Can you drive between the Gokarna beaches?
Only as far as Om Beach. Half Moon and Paradise are reachable on foot along the cliff path or by boat — there is no road. The full walk from Kudle to Paradise takes 3 to 4 hours over rocky ground with no shade or water, so start early and carry supplies, or take a boat one way.
Is Gokarna worth visiting in the monsoon?
Not for the beaches. Between June and September the sea is rough, boats stop running, swimming is unsafe and the cliff path is slippery and risky. The town and temple remain accessible, but the trip loses most of its point. November to February is the season.
Gokarna or Goa from Bangalore?
Gokarna is quieter, cheaper and considerably less built up, with beaches you reach on foot rather than by road. Goa has far more infrastructure, nightlife and easier access. If the appeal is a quiet beach and you do not mind walking to it, Gokarna; if you want everything laid on, Goa.
