Most missed flights in Bengaluru are not missed at the airport. They are missed on Hebbal flyover at 6 PM, or on the Outer Ring Road in light rain, by someone who worked forwards from when they wanted to leave rather than backwards from when the plane doors close.
The arithmetic
Three numbers decide it. Kempegowda International Airport asks for 2 hours before a domestic departure and 3 hours before an international one. Add your route’s travel time. Then add nothing for optimism — plan against the upper end of the travel range, because the lower end assumes a road that is only occasionally that empty.
Leave time =
flight departure − (2h domestic / 3h international at the airport) − upper end of your travel time
By area
Ordered by distance to BLR. The “leave by” columns already include the airport buffer, so they are how long before your flight to actually be in the cab.
| Area | Distance | Travel time | Leave by domestic | Leave by international |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yelahanka | ~18 km | 30–50 min | 2h 50m | 3h 50m |
| Hebbal | ~25 km | 40–65 min | 3h 5m | 4h 5m |
| Malleshwaram | ~35 km | 60–90 min | 3h 30m | 4h 30m |
| Indiranagar | ~38 km | 65–95 min | 3h 35m | 4h 35m |
| Marathahalli | ~40 km | 70–100 min | 3h 40m | 4h 40m |
| Whitefield | ~42 km | 75–110 min | 3h 50m | 4h 50m |
| Koramangala | ~44 km | 80–115 min | 3h 55m | 4h 55m |
| Jayanagar | ~45 km | 80–115 min | 3h 55m | 4h 55m |
| Bellandur | ~46 km | 80–115 min | 3h 55m | 4h 55m |
| BTM Layout | ~47 km | 85–115 min | 3h 55m | 4h 55m |

Travel ranges are the planning windows QuicReach uses for each route in normal conditions. Rain, weekday evening peaks and event traffic all push towards — and past — the upper end.
Three things that break the estimate
Rain
Bengaluru traffic degrades faster in rain than almost any other Indian metro, and the airport approach through Hebbal is one of the first stretches to seize up. In monsoon, treat the upper end of the range as the new middle.
The 4–8 PM window
The evening peak overlaps with the busiest departure wave. If your flight leaves between 7 and 10 PM, you are travelling at the worst possible time and should add 30 minutes on top of the table.
Booking the cab too late
The 4–6 AM flight wave is when on-demand availability is thinnest and surge is highest — the moment you least want to be refreshing an app. Pre-booking removes that variable entirely.
The part people get wrong
Leaving early costs nothing on a fixed fare, and costs a great deal on a dynamic one. That asymmetry is worth understanding: on an on-demand app, the hours you are most likely to need a cab — the pre-dawn departure wave, the post-work rush — are exactly when the price is highest and availability is worst. A pre-booked fixed fare removes the incentive to cut it fine. You can see what your route costs on the fare calculator, or read how the surge mechanics actually work in our piece on airport surge pricing.
Common questions
How early should I leave for Bangalore airport?
Work backwards from the flight, not forwards from now. Allow 2 hours at the airport before a domestic departure and 3 before an international one, then add the upper end of your route’s travel time — the upper end, because the lower end assumes traffic that may not exist on the day. From most of central and east Bengaluru that means leaving roughly 3.5 to 4 hours before a domestic flight.
How long does it take to reach BLR airport from the city?
Between roughly 50 minutes and 2 hours depending on where you start. North Bengaluru areas like Yelahanka and Hebbal are closest at 25–35 km; the southern and eastern IT corridor — Electronic City, HSR Layout, Sarjapur Road — runs 45–55 km and crosses the city. The table in this article gives the range we plan against for each area.
Does leaving earlier cost more?
Not on QuicReach. The fare is fixed and shown upfront, so a 4 AM departure costs the same as a midday one. On-demand apps price by demand, which is exactly why the early-morning and late-evening flight waves are when their fares peak — the times you are least able to be flexible.
What if I hit unexpected traffic on the way?
It is the reason to plan against the upper end of the range rather than the average. Bengaluru traffic is unusually sensitive to rain and to weekday evening peaks, and the Hebbal and KR Puram stretches on the airport approach are where delays concentrate.
